Reinterpreting the music album. Case Study: Mujer Divina by Natalia Lafourcade
This project was about rethinking the traditional album format. Instead of just a cover design, why not create an entire object orbiting around the music and story behind it, adding value to the overall experience?
I embarked on reinterpreting Natalia Lafourcade’s rendition of the iconic Mexican musician Agustin Lara's work.
Inspired by Agustin Lara’s relationships with women and researching the pre- and post-revolution era for women in Mexico during the time he composed his songs, I realised that to depict a Mexican 'Divine woman' (which is also the album title), it was important to showcase not only their elegance but also their strength and resilience, drawing inspiration from influential women who contributed to society's development between 1930-1960. These are the true 'Divine women' I aim to portray in the album design, moving beyond superficial beauty to highlight their impact and legacy.
The final outcome was a series of 15 posters (one for each song and a cover) blending the inspiration behind Agustin Lara’s music—strong, empowered women—with Natalia Lafourcade’s style—crafty, colorful, and personal. Each poster featured a portrait and a story about the portrayed woman, along with the translation of the text at the front. The poster was scannable using AR for music download.
